I think pretty much everything you can do in "glm" you can do with a
vbmakeglm script. The G matrix has to be constructed separately,
which you can do using a gds script. Type either command with no
arguments for some help.

Yes and no. I think as of 1.8.4, the standard GLM sequence still has
the "audit" job, which depends on IDL. The audit job is a
convenience, you can get the same information from other sources, but
it's nice to have. There are also some things you can do in the old
voxel surfer that you can't yet do in vbview. So the latest 1.8
releases don't depend critically on IDL, but depending on your needs,
you may still find IDL important.
