This is just an unbelievably stupid bug on my part.  I've replaced the
binaries on the ftp/web site, and the production binaries at the Penn
CCN and CfN.  (Note that the CCN is still mostly running 1.8.3 --
we'll try to upgrade when it's convenient for everyone.)

Please let me know if you have more trouble with it (apparently no
one's been using this feature).
