Your covariates will still model the mean signal levels for their
respective trial types, so you probably wouldn't want to scale them by
trial count, unless I'm missing something.  It would probably help if
someone who's had a use for this option could chime in, but it's
possible no such person is reading this list.  I'll see if I can get
Geoff to reply, I believe this option was his creation.
