I'm not 100% sure, but I believe the current version of vbstatmap
(1.8.4) will work with older releases -- that is, you can download it
and get the benefit of the new features without having to upgrade
anything else. The docs and download links are at:

With a simple shell script you can iterate over subjects and contrasts
automatically.

vbmaskmunge is indeed the best way to do this -- you could download
just the newer version of vbmaskmunge.

For both of these, if you're worried about breaking something in your
current setup (vbstatmap is used in some jobtypes, I'm not sure if
that was true in 1.6) give the file a new name.

Of course I would strongly encourage you to upgrade to the 1.8 series.
But in the meantime, you can still take advantage of some of the new
functionality.
